Can you play it? Marking a new beginning for one of Sony’s flagship franchises, God of War for PS4 was as surprising as it was (expectedly) awesome. Trading Greek Mythology for Norse mythology, Kratos is a father now to a young boy named Atreus. The storyline follows their quest to scatter Atreus’ mother’s ashes atop the highest peak. Using a single-camera view, God of War‘s action feels as close to the player as humanly possible. That’s a great thing, considering Kratos’ new axe happens to be one of the coolest weapons in modern action games. Atreus assists Kratos in combat with a bow, but God of War stood out for far more than its gameplay. Somehow, Sony Santa Monica created a moving, intimate story that was both true to the anti-hero Kratos while opening a chapter for the future. An intimate tale of father and son like no other we’ve seen in games, God of War has more heart than the vast majority of AAA games. Toss in excellent writing paired with beautiful performances, and God of War suddenly changed the entire tone of the series. Kratos is still a brutal warrior capable of slaying monsters and men with extreme force, but God of War showed him in a different light. Progress is what makes God of War so stunning, and that’s something we can all relate to.
Monster video strain resource game pick of the day : No other series besides Crysis has become infamous for being technologically future-proof. And while this trend started with Crysis 1, it didn’t stop there. Each game kept on upping the ante until Crysis 3, which remains the most graphically stunning game in the series, and arguably the medium, to this day. Though it’s relatively easy to run on minimum and recommended settings, if you try to get Crysis 3 running at a playable frame rate at 4K with every setting maxed out, you’d better have a fire extinguisher handy. Recommended specs: CPU: 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-750, 2.7GHz AMD Phenom II X4 805 – RAM: 4GB – Storage: 17GB – GPU: Nvidia GTX 560, AMD Radeon HD 5870 – OS: Windows Vista, 7, 8. I like Star Wars games and usually this games are resource intensive. Sadly, it doesn’t look like we’ll ever get to play Star Wars 1313, the cancelled game about Boba Fett’s bounty hunting adventures in the less respectable areas of Coruscant. But we have Star Wars: Bounty Hunter at least, the story of his father/the guy he was cloned from and his own adventures during the Prequel era. It’s admittedly a little janky, and not terribly innovative, but there will always be something empowering about playing through a game as a Fett. Let’s frontload this entry with a big caveat – Star Wars Galaxies was not a great game. The now defunct MMO went through so many revisions as to even alienate its biggest fans by the time the 2003 title shut down in 2011. But what Galaxies had was unbounded ambition and great ideas, if not always the means to implement them. Rather than being fully combat focussed, Galaxies was all about the community. Want to be the Cantina bartender? Sure, you can make an in-game living that way. Or an artist? Or a smuggler? Or a musician? Or taxi service. All possible. Want to own your own home, your own plot of land? All this was promised, as well as the usual “route to being a Jedi” stuff. Even better, it knew the magic of the universe – although this was later overturned (a change which was vocally resented by core players) initially only a handful of players would ever become Jedi, after fulfilling a gruelling set of criteria.
